China is ‘deeply concerned’ about Uyghur rebels in Afghanistan: China’s envoy to the UN

by Aamaj News

China’s envoy to the UN, Zhang Jun, expressed his concern over presence of Uyghur rebels under the name of “the East Turkestan Islamic Movement (ETIM) in Afghanistan.

China’s envoy to the UN said that between 200 and 700 fighters of ETIM relocated from Badakhshan province to Baghlan and Takhar provinces.

“Withdrawal of foreign troops has created a vacuum in the security situation,” Zhang Jun said.

Zhang said that China is “deeply concerned” about reports that ISIS has recruited fighters from ETIM.

“ETIM fighters in Afghanistan even clamored to ‘return to Xinjiang for Jihad,” he emphasized.

While China considers ETIM a threat to its security, the US removed this group from its terrorist list in 2020.
