UNICEF executive director, Catherine Russell, said that the international community and Taliban must find ways to work together – for the sake of the children of Afghanistan.

“Time is of the essence. The longer we wait, the worse things will be for the children of Afghanistan,” she said in a statement after visiting Kabul.

According to her decades of conflict, a devastating drought, a collapsing economy and the impact of international sanctions are causing irreparable damage to the children of Afghanistan. She added what she has seen in Afghanistan breeds her concerns.

She added that situation is getting worst and according to UNICEF projections for 2022, more than 1 million children will need treatment for severe acute malnutrition.

UNICEF executive director said that approximately 13 million children will need humanitarian assistance. Diseases like measles and acute watery diarrhoea will continue to spread.

“I urge them to grant us the funding we need to help the most vulnerable,” she said.

After Taliban’s domination in mid-August the world assistance to Afghanistan has been limited and financial restrictions imposed as well, which led to economic crisis.
