رسانه‌های امریکایی به نقل از مقام‌های این کشور گزارش داده‌اند که روسیه پس از حمله به اوکراین از چین درخواست تجهیزات نظامی کرده است. به گفته‌‌ی رسانه‌های امریکایی این‌کار نگرانی را در کاخ سفید برانگیخت که بیجینگ ممکن است تلاش‌های غرب برای کمک به نیروهای اوکراینی برای دفاع از کشورشان را تضعیف کند.
روزنامه‌ی فایننشال تایمز در گزارشی گفته است که روسیه به دنبال دریافت کمک نظامی از چین است. یک مقام امریکایی به این روزنامه گفته است نشانه‌هایی وجود دارد که نشان می‌دهد در حالی که جنگ در اوکراین به هفته‌ی سوم رسیده، تسلیحات روسیه در حال تمام شدن است.
اما لیو پنگیو، سخن‌گوی سفارت چین در واشنگتن از هرگونه پیشنهادی مبنی بر تمایل چین برای کمک به روسیه اظهار بی‌اطلاعی کرده است.
او گفت: «چین به گونه‌ی عمیق نگران وضعیت اوکراین است و غم‌گین است. ما صمیمانه امیدواریم که اوضاع کاهش یابد و صلح بازگردد.»
واشنگتن پست نیز چنین گزارش مشابه را به نشر رسانده است.

با این حال روسیه اقدام خود را در اوکراین «عملیات ویژه» می‌خواند. اما با آن‌هم بر خلاف تصور قبلی، پیش‌روی ارتش روسیه در شهرهای اوکراین به دلیل مقاومت ارتش و نیروهای مردمی این کشور سریع و برق‌آسا نبوده است.
چین تاکنون حمله روسیه را به اوکراین محکوم نکرده است، اما گفته است که خواستار راه‌حلی از طریق مذاکره است.
چین خود را به‌عنوان یک بازیگر بی‌طرف در بحران اوکراین معرفی کرده و از محکوم کردن روسیه به دلیل حمله به این کشور خودداری کرده است. ایالات متحده‌ی امریکا هم‌چنین هیچ نشانه‌ای از تمایل رییس جمهور چین را برای اعمال فشار بر پوتین ندیده است.
