محمد حلیم فدایی، والی در حکومت پیشین می‌گوید که ملا هبت‌الله آخندزاده، رهبر طالبان چهار سال پیش کُشته شده و در وزیرستان شمالی دفن است.
او در توییتی نگاشته: «استخبارات منطقه کوشش می‌کند تا شخصی دیگری را به‌نام او معرفی کند و کار آراستن چنین شخصی در جریان است.»
این در حالی‌ست که پیش از این نیز بار‌ها خبرهای متعددی در مورد مرگ رهبر طالبان نشر شده بود؛ موضوعی‌که سخن‌گویان طالبان هم‌واره آن‌را رد کرده‌اند.
ملا هبت‌الله پس از کُشته شدن اختر منصور در سال ۲۰۱۶، رهبری طالبان را به عهده گرفت.
