دمیتری ژیرنوف، سفیر فدراسیون روسیه در کابل در تازه‌ترین اظهارنظری در مورد رابطه کشورش با اوکراین به‌ویژه موضوع کریمیه گفته که بر بنیاد دیدگاه ولادیمیر پوتین، رئیس جمهور این کشور، طی چندین دهه مسکو تلاش کرد تا رابطهاش را با اوکراین عادی سازد؛ اما به گفته‌ی او وضعیت پس از «کودتای سال ۲۰۱۴» زمانی تغییر کرد که نابودی و محو فزیکی طرف‌داران توسعه مناسبات عادی با روسیه، در اوکراین آغاز گردید.
سفیر ژیرنوف در مورد وضعیت کریمیه گفته: «نُه سال قبل، یعنی در مارچ سال ۲۰۱۴، باشندگان کریمیه که از بی‌شرمی ملی‌گرایان اوکراین به خشم آمده بودند، آگاهانه و مستقلانه موافقت خود را بخاطر استقلال کریمیه و برگشت آن به سرزمین تاریخی‌اش – روسیه – اعلام کردند و بیش‌تر از ۹۶ درصد رأی دهندگان به طرف‌داری از این امر رأی دادند.»
سفیر روسیه در افغانستان افزوده: «مشکل‌های زیادی طی سال های گذشته در کریمیه حل گردید‌ه، مشکل‌های که در دوره حاکمیت اوکراین در کریمیه اندوخته شده بودند.
کارهای زیادی در بخش ارتقای جذابیت‌های اقتصادی، سرمایه‌گذاری، فرهنگی و گردش‌گری نیز صورت گرفته است.»
سفیر ژیرنوف در ادامه افزوده: «احداث پُل کریمیه در کوتاه‌ترین زمان رکوردی به سمبول پیوستن شبه جزیره به روسیه تبدیل شد و گشایش جاده موتر رو بالای این پل در سال ۲۰۱۸ بر رشد شاخصه‌های توسعه اجتماعی و اقتصادی شبه جزیره تأثیر گذاشت.»
اظهارات سفیر روسیه در مورد رابطه کشورش با اوکراین در حالی صورت می‌گیرد که تنش روابط میان مسکو و کی‌یف از سال پار بدین‌سو به بالاترین حد آن رسید تا این‌که روسیه با این کشور درگیر شد و همین اکنون نیز درگیری شدید در شهر بخموت جریان دارد.
جنگ اوکراین بر رابطه روسیه با غرب نیز تاثیر گذاشته و دو طرف هم‌دیگر را به جنگ‌افروزی متهم می‌کنند.
