رسانه‌های ایرانی گزارش داده‌اند که دولت ایران از آغاز سال جاری تاکنون بیش ۷۰۰ و ۳۸ هزار شهروندان غیرقانونی افغانستان را به گونه اجباری اخراج کرده است.
با این حال پیش‌تر شهروندان افغانستان که از ایران بازگشته‌اند به فرانسه ۲۴ گفته‌‌اند با این که برخی از آن‌ها مدرک رسمی اقامت در ایران را داشتند، بازداشت و اخراج شده‌‌اند.
این درحالی‌ست که هم‌زمان با تصمیم حکومت موقت پاکستان مبنی بر اخراج مهاجران غیرقانونی افغانستان از این کشور، ایران نیز اخراج مهاجران غیرقانونی را شدت بخشیده است.
گفتنی‌ست که پسا تسلط طالبان بر افغانستان صدها هزار شهروند افغانستان به ایران مهاجرت کردند.
