احمدشاه مسعود «قهرمان ملی افغانستان» و یکی از رهبران نامور در برابر ارتش سرخ شوروی و بعد طالبان، ۲۲ سال پیش از امروز (۱۸ سنبله) از سوی دو فرد عرب‌تبار که خود را خبرنگار معرفی کرده بودند، در پی انفجاری در ولسوالی خواجه بهاءالدین ولایت تخار ترور شد و ۲ روز پس از جان باختن‌اش حادثه ۱۱ سپتمبر ۲۰۰۱ در ایالات متحده امریکا اتفاق افتاد.
هواداران احمدشاه مسعود از او هم‌چون «فاتح جنگ سرد، بهترین چریک روی زمین، سپهسالار آزادی، مبارز خسته‌گی‌ناپذیر، شیر پنجشیر، ناپلئوت افغانستان نام می‌برند»؛ مخالفان‌اش اما او را جنگ‌سالار می‌گویند.
مسعود یکی از بزرگ‌ترین فرماندهان جنگ‌های چریکی در قرن بیستم بود و با «یوسیپ بروز تیتو»، «هو شی مین» و «چه گوارا» مقایسه می‌شود، به‌ویژه به دلیل آن‌که به دفعات توانست از زادگاهش دره پنجشیر در برابر حمله‌های ارتش سرخ شوروی و بعدها طالبان دفاع کند.
هر فردی از مسعود برداشت متفاوتی دارد؛ یکی از او هم‌چون «چریکی که توانایی مبدل ساختن اتاقک کاه‌گلی را به کاخ ریاست جمهوری» داشت نام می‌برد و دیگری می‌گوید مسعود کسی است که نام‌اش در دل تاریخ با مقاومت و ایستادگی گره خورده است.
نام احمدشاه مسعود در سال‌های اول جهاد در برابر اشغال افغانستان از سوی شوروی بر سر زبان‌ها افتاد. او در کوه‌های هندوکش با نیروهای شوروی پیشین می‌جنگید و پنجشیر را تسخیر ناپذیر نگه داشت و بعدها نیروهای نظامی مخالف طالبان در شمال افغانستان را رهبری کرد.
در سال‌های اول دهه هشتاد مسعود پرآوازه‌ترین فرمانده علیه ارتش سرخ بود و چندین حمله بزرگ شوروی به دره‌ی پنجشیر را با شکست روبرو ساخت و به شیر پنجشیر مشهور شد.
طالبان در آغاز نیمه دوم دهه نود به کابل رسیدند و احمدشاه مسعود که نیروهای دولت اسلامی به رهبری برهان‌الدین ربانی را هدایت می‌کرد به شمال کابل عقب نشینی کردند.
مسعود که در جوانی‌اش در پولی‌تخنیک دانش‌آموز بود با درنظرداشت جو سیاسی آن زمان و فضای فکری خودش، در سال دوم تحصیل در سال ۱۹۷۲ در پولی‌تخنیک به دنیای سیاست علاقه‌مند شد. پس از کودتای ناکام علیه داوود خان، به پاکستان رفت و با تجاوز روس‌ها دوباره به افغانستان برگشت. او نزدیک به ده سال در برابر روس‌ها رزمید و پس از خروج ارتش سرخ، به مبارزه علیه حکومت تحت حمایت آن‌ها و به هدف استقرار حکومت اسلامی به مبارزه‌اش ادامه داد. مسعود به همان پیمانه که جنگ و سیاست می‌کرد، کتاب نیز می‌خواند. در جذب و تحلیل اوضاع پیرامونش، استعداد منحصر‌به‌فرد داشت.
مسعود ۲۰ سال از عمرش را صرف تحقق آرمان‌های آزادی‌خواهانه کرد.
مسعود شیفته اسلام معتدل و نظم مردم‌سالار بود، اما نظم طالبان از دید او تندرو و افراطی بود. او در صحبت‌هایش به تکرار و تاکید از دموکراسی، انتخابات، تساوی حقوق زن و مرد، حقوق بشر و تعامل با جهان پیرامون یاد می‌کرد.
احمدشاه مسعود معتقد بود که یگانه راه معقول برای افغانستان فقط از طریق دموکراسی و انتخابات ممکن است و این‌که هر انسان یک رأی خود را داشته باشد.
او در ماه اپریل ۲۰۰۱ در نخستین سفر اروپایی‌اش به فرانسه رفت و پارلمان اتحادیه اروپا از او به گرمی استقبال کرد.
احمدشاه مسعود از حامیان تحصیل زنان و دختران و نقش آفرینی آن‌ها در جامعه بود.
حالا بیست‌سال پس از ترور احمدشاه مسعود، پرچم طالبان دوباره در افغانستان و حتی در زادگاه او به اهتزاز درآمده است.
بعد از ایجاد نظم نوین در افغانستان در ۲۰۰۱، نام مسعود به‌عنوان قهرمان ملی درج شد و روز ۱۸ سنبله نیز به این مناسب به گونه‌ی رسمی در سراسر کشور رخصتی عمومی اعلام گردید؛ اما پس از تسلط دوباره طالبان بر افغانستان، این گروه رخصتی عمومی را به مناسبت روز ترور احمدشاه مسعود لغو و از او هیچ‌گونه یادبودی نکرده‌اند و هواران‌اش نیز تنها به اعلامیه‌ها اکتفا کرده‌اند.
اکنون اما با روی کار آمدن دوباره طالبان در افغانستان، جبهه مقاومت ملی توسط احمد مسعود، پسر احمدشاه مسعود، رهبری می‌شود و اخیراً حمله‌های چریکی این جبهه در برابر طالبان افزایش یافته است.
با این همه به‌رغم خواست‌های مکرر فرمانده‌هان پیشین جهادی و شهروندان کشور از جامعه جهانی، هنوز پهلوی‌های مبهم ترور احمدشاه مسعود از سوی دو «تروریست عرب‌تبار» روشن نشده است.
۲۲ سال پسا ترور احمدشاه مسعود، طالبان با تفسیر سخت‌گیرانه از اسلام بار دیگر به قدرت بازگشته‌اند. زنان در خانه اسیر اند و مردم‌سالاری به یک رویای دست نیافتنی تبدیل شده است.
اما این‌که آیا بار دیگر مقاومتی مانند ایستادگی احمد شاه مسعود شکل خواهد گرفت یا خیر، گذشت زمان پاسخ خواهد گفت.
