Ahmad Shah Massoud, “Afghanistan’s National Hero” and one of the famous leaders against the Soviet Red Army and then the Taliban, 22 years ago today (September 9) by two people of Arab origin who introduced themselves as journalists, following an explosion in Khawaja Bahauddin district Takhar Province was assassinated and 2 days after his death, the incident of September 11, 2001, happened in the United States of America.
Ahmad Shah Massoud’s lovers call him “the conqueror of the Cold War, the best guerrilla on earth, the general of freedom, the indefatigable fighter, the Lion of Panjshir, the Napoleon of Afghanistan”; His opponents call him a warlord.
Massoud was one of the greatest commanders of guerrilla warfare in the 20th century and has been compared to “Josip Broz Tito”, “Ho Chi Minh” and “Che Guevara”, especially because he was able to repeatedly defend his hometown Panjshir Valley against the attacks of the Soviet Red Army and Taliban.
Each person has a different perception of Massoud; One of them mentions him as “a guerilla who had the ability to turn a thatched room into a presidential palace” and another says that Massoud is someone whose name is tied to resistance and standing in the heart of history.
Ahmad Shah Masoud’s name became popular in the first years of Jihad against the occupation of Afghanistan by the Soviets. He fought the former Soviet forces in the Hindu Kush mountains and kept Panjshir unconquerable, and later led the anti-Taliban military forces in northern Afghanistan.
In the early 1980s, Masoud was the most famous commander against the Red Army defeated several major Soviet attacks in the Panjshir Valley, and became known as the Lion of Panjshir.
The Taliban reached Kabul at the beginning of the second half of the nineties, and Ahmad Shah Masoud, who led the forces of the Islamic State led by Burhanuddin Rabbani, retreated to the north of Kabul.
Masoud, who was a student at the Polytechnic in his youth, taking into account the political atmosphere of that time and his intellectual atmosphere, became interested in the world of politics in the second year of his studies at the Polytechnic in 1972. After the failed coup against Dawood Khan, he went to Pakistan and came back to Afghanistan after the invasion of the Red Army. He fought against the Soviet Army for nearly ten years and after the withdrawal of the Red Army, he continued to fight against the government supported by them and to establish an Islamic government. Massoud also read books in the same way that he did war and politics. He had a unique talent for absorbing and analyzing the situation around him.

Masoud was fascinated by moderate Islam and democratic order, but the order of the Taliban was radical and extreme in his eyes. In his speeches, he repeated and emphasized democracy, elections, equal rights of men and women, human rights, and interaction with the surrounding world.
Ahmad Shah Massoud believed that the only reasonable way for Afghanistan is possible only through democracy and elections and that every person has one vote.
He went to France on his first European trip in April 2001, and the European Union Parliament warmly welcomed him.
Ahmad Shah Massoud was one of the supporters of women and girls’ education and their role in society.
Now, twenty years after the assassination of Ahmad Shah Massoud, the flag of the Taliban has been raised again in Afghanistan and even in his hometown.
After the establishment of the new order in Afghanistan in 2001, Masoud’s name was included as a national hero, and September 9 was officially declared a public holiday throughout the country. However, after the Taliban regained control of Afghanistan, this group canceled the public holiday on the occasion of the assassination of Ahmad Shah Massoud and did not commemorate him in any way, and his supporters only made announcements.
